Introduction

I have set up this website to display the information that I have found about Clophill's history. The site will grow as I discover more. I started with the 1851 to 1901 censuses and analysed them using a spreadsheet.

Occupations

Straw Plaiters

In the 1871 census, out of a total female population of 655, there were 264 Straw Plaiters.

Agricultural Labourers

In the 1851 census, out of a total male population of 560, there were 238 Agricultural Labourers

Population

In the 1851 census, out of a total population of 1181, 601 were aged below 20 years.

Names

George and Elizabeth were the most popular given names.

Roberts was the most numerous surname followed by Bottoms, Webb and Gudgin.

Contributions

Inevitably with historical research more questions arise than are answered. Can you help identify any of the following?

1851 census - Dog Kennels. Humphrey's Workhouse. Pest House.

1861 census - Humphrey's Wood.

1881 census - Rosa Villa.

1891 census - Mount Pleasant.

1901 census - Fau Halfpenny's Hill, Collip's Corner.

I would be pleased to add any information that you may have about the history of Clophill - memories, family history, old photos or postcards. Also information about occupations such as straw plaiting and brickmaking.
