Calisto the program Calisto tour and guide Calendar explanations English calendar Site map

Clicking any point in Calisto's main calendar display will "drill down", opening the Comparator window which shows the dates from three calendars in parallel. You can drill down further by clicking in this window to show the full information for one day. Both windows are illustrated below.

The Comparator window displayed below shows the calendar during Easter 1725. England is still using the Julian calendar and Italy has changed to the Gregorian calendar. Dates in the Jewish Calendar are also shown.

It can be seen that the Italian calendar is 11 days ahead of England. The spring or vernal equinox is shown with a red V. It occurs on Tuesday 9th March in England and Tuesday 20th March in Italy.

Before 1752 the English year started on 25th March. In Calisto days in the 'old' year are shown in a different colour.

More than 20 calendars are available (see list)

The English Easter day is shown with a red E.

In Italy Easter not only had a different date, but it was celebrated on a different day. A blue E shows the Italian (Gregorian) Easter. After 1752 the use of the blue E changes and shows the 'old' Easter still being used in countries using the Julian calendar - mainly countries of the Orthodox churches.

Other letters show: Winter & Summer solstices and Vernal & Autumnal equinoxes.

New and full moons are indicated by and respectively.

n.b.  1. Days in the Jewish and Moslem calendars start at 6pm or sunset. Thus in the calendars Wednesday begins early on Tuesday evening.
    2. The Julian day number can be shown in the Comparator - this represents the number at noon on the day in question.
