Little Bears Family Homeschool Study Notes

History

Introduction

I have said previously that we see History as the backbone of all our other studies, and since I wanted to provide an holistic education, emphasising the "inter-connectedness" of all things, I wanted to study all the subjects using "unit studies" based around History. I even started writing our own History Programme.

However, the more I began to think about this, the more overwhelmed I became, and decided in the end to use Sonlight curriculum which uses a Charlotte Mason-esque approach, with lots of good literature, and history as its base. We've used it now for 8 years (though we still supplement with occassional projects of our own) and we're very pleased with it. If you're interested in unit-studies for history, though, or if you're thinking of gathering curriculum resources for history yourself, do take a look at our programme.

Recommendations for Literature

I highly recommend Sonlight curriculum's selection of historical fiction, and here is a small selection to give you an idea:

There is also a fabulous book list for British history available on the Charlotte Mason UK e-mail group.

Unit-Studies for History

Aside from Sonlight curriculum, we have done projects on the Mesopotamians, the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Celts, Romans in Britain, the Middle Ages, the Tudors, and the Stuarts & the Civil War. We try to incorporate arts & crafts, so we make models and lapbooks.

History Themes: Through the ages: * Houses * Transport * Toys * Farming * Family History & Genealogy * Kings and Queens * Children growing up * Art * Architecture * Design, technology & inventions * Language * Mathematical discoveries * Sports & Games * Communication * Music * Dance * Religion * Society & Civilisation * Science & Discovery * Costume * Explorations, pioneers & pilgrims *

Enjoy!
