Maidstone Area Arts Council

It is clear to anyone reading this brochure that the calibre of artistic endeavour in the Borough is increasing. Analysis of previous brochures for the Spring period of say 2-3 years ago identifies the quantum leap to today achieved by the MAAC membership.

This is of enormous credit to both the individual organisations, ably supported by those that participate in their programmes. ‘Customers’ (members) – people who buy tickets – are the life blood of any arts group. They in turn need to be supported by local government in the form of grant, advice, encouragement and, in some cases, expertise.

And so to the Spring Offers. The ‘Star Event’ was difficult to single out as there are so many from which to choose. But ‘Classic KM’ must be the choice for you all this spring. Kent Music has brought together the three top youth organisations to perform together at the Mote – a rare treat. The Youth Orchestra combines with the Youth Choir and the Youth Wind Orchestra for a ‘classic’ and ‘operatic’ programme that will delight us all.  This is an event most worthy of your support. Phone Astley House NOW for your tickets.

Closely behind this event is a whole collection of ‘must attend’ performances. The talents of Simon Proctor are on offer with two concerts also at Astley House. If you can’t make it in February, then go along in May. Varied, fun, serious, modern, traditional – so great are Simon’s talents that there is something for all the family.

Not forgetting the am-drammers, the talents of the Willington Players return to the Hazlitt for Noel Cowards Blithe Spirit. They too are going from strength to strength, and can guarantee any audience a chuckle and a guffaw at their always-entertaining productions.

The Brochure is top and tailed by two Societies that cater for music and film to a very high standard. The Film Society’s Spring programme is of the highest calibre, and those wanting to enjoy world class films in more intimate surroundings should go along to The Exchange.  Likewise join the Recorded Music Society at the Marsham Street Community Centre for their spring programme.

If you live ‘out in the constituencies’ then take advantage of the venues offered by so many of our ‘little but large’ members. East Malling Singers, Bearsted Choral, Malling Research, Sutton Valence are communities rich with talent and musical gifts. These are all events worthy of your support.

To confirm the rich seam of artistic talent look again at this brochure. Three Concerts from the Symphony Orchestra, two Concerts from the Choral Union, and a wealth of lunchtime musical ‘interludes’ at All Saints. Few Boroughs in the South East claim so much for so many.

All these confirm that the arts in the Borough are not ordinary – they are exceptional. Everyone in our community should be very proud and delighted that this is available to us all. Invite friends and acquaintances to join you. Share the arts, put a spring in your steps, raise your spirits!
