General Joseph R. West was a notorious Indian hating newspaper publisher before the Civil war. It was his California volunteers who were responsible for the murder of Mangas Coloradas. West reportedly telling the chiefs guards; 'I want him dead or alive tomorrow morining, do you understand I want him dead.'
After the murder of Mangas West attempted to exterminate the rest of the Mimbrenos Apache. His tactics included inviting one band to a feast to cement a peace treaty and opening fire on them as they ate.
