Great Pueblo Revolt
The destruction of all the temples, sacred vessels, and vestments, shows the iniquity of those barbarians and the hatred which they feel for our holy faith. These are sufficient reasons for war being waged against them without mercy, and for declaring all those who may be captured, slaves for a period of ten years in the manner which was done formerly.
Don Bartolome de Estrada, governor of El Parral
The divine plan of life in this land was laid out for us by our great spirit, Masau'u. This plan cannot be changed. The Hopi life is all set according to the fundamental principles of life of this divine plan. We can not do otherwise but to follow this plan. There is no other way for us... What the Great Spirit made and planned no power on earth can change it.
Hopi delegation
Great Spirit made us to be Hopis, to speak Hopi, to worship Hopi way, to be independent and free on our own land. Are you going to deny us all these?
Hopi delegation
The Hopi people have developed a way of life rooted deep in the traditions and experiences of their ancestors. We look to the wisdom of the past to assist us in those decisions which determine the future of ourselves and our children. To follow another course would be untrue and would bring upon us those troubles which fall upon a people who are not true to themselves and their beliefs.
