EARLY DANCE CIRCLE
25th ANNUAL FESTIVAL, 2008
The 25th EDC Festival - our Silver Jubilee - takes us to Harrogate, the gateway to the beautiful Yorkshire Dales and a most fashionable place for dancing during the Regency and Victorian periods.
The weekend will commence on Friday, at 7.45 p.m. in the Ashville College’s Memorial Hall with A Trip to Harrogate, 1798-1820. This lecture-demonstration will present Tunes, Songs and Dances from a 1798 manuscript by Joshua Jackson, North Yorkshire corn-miller and musician. The manuscript, containing over 500 tunes, songs and dances, has been researched by Magnetic North, a team of local musicians and dance instructors. After the talk, they will offer an opportunity to learn some of the dances with music provided by the band.
NB: If you wish to eat before the talk, you must book supper – served at 6.30!
Saturday’s Festival, in the Auditorium of Ashville College, will run from 2 p.m. to 5.45 p.m. This will be preceded by the AGM at 1.15. Please come promptly as we must discuss new thoughts on Group Membership and plans to involve early dance in cultural events leading up to the 2012 Olympics.
As well as the usual group and solo demonstrations, the Festival includes three sessions of general dancing: dances from Joshua Jackson’s 1798 Manuscript (see Friday’s talk); quadrilles, waltzes and polkas as danced at 1840’s Harrogate Balls; and favourites from the 1920s - a period when Harrogate again became a fashionable resort.
Lunch must be ordered in advance. Please fill in the relevant part of the Form.
Light refreshments will be available throughout the day.
Saturday Evening: After a dinner of Yorkshire fare, the evening’s dancing will take a Regency theme, the music provided by the Spa Bar Tatters band. Regency costume would be appreciated. A pay bar will be available.
The evening meal, which must also be booked in advance, will be served at 6.30 and includes a vegetarian option.
Tables will be available for those who wish to sell their products. These must be booked in advance: a fee of £5.00 should be paid when booking your table.
Sunday morning’s Guided Walk will include a visit to the Valley Gardens and the Royal Pump Room Museum. Betty’s Café Tea Rooms, 1919, and the Pump Rooms are situated close by. Accommodation details and further information on local activities are available on 0845 3 893223 or www.enjoyharrogate.com
