Tay Coast and PerthPerth Bridges
The Fair City of Perth, the capital of Scotland until the middle of the fifteenth century, has had a long and eventful history, from the foundation of the earliest monasteries until the Jacobite risings in the eighteenth century. The town has a fine situation on the right bank of the Tay between two open spaces called Inches. The former name of Perth was St Johnstoun, recalling that the Church of St John played a prominent role in the fortunes of the city. Forty alters were once to be found in this old church, where in 1559 John Knox preached the sermon which incited his followers to purge the churches of idolatry. |
