ArgyllCrinan Canal
The Crinan Canal (seen above at Crinan) was begun at the end of the eighteenth century and completed in 1817. Its construction enabled small craft to sail from Loch Gulp to the west coast without haveing to make the long and sometimes dangerous passage round Kintyre. It is nine miles in length and has no fewer than fifteen locks, but today is used only by pleasure craft. Queen Victoria passed through it in 1847 on her way to Oban. |
