Inverness

Inverness Castle (1)

Inverness is the principal town of the Northern Highlands and has much of interest. On Castle Hill the present Castle serves as the County Offices. The present building is of nineteenth-century date, but stands on the site of several former castles. The Town Cross incorporates a rough stone known as the ‘Stone of the Tubs’, on which it is said women used to rest their pots on returning from filling them at the river. St Andrew’s Cathedral, on the western bank of the Ness, is a handsome building in Decorated style.
