The Glowing Eggs Of Titan

Synopsis:
When its meson power malfunctions, Galasphere 347 makes a landing on the Saturnian moon Titan for repairs. While doing so, Husky discovers an egg that glows strongly. Raeburn thinks they could be used to light Martian homes in an attempt to conserve power in their worsening energy crisis and sends Dart and his crew back to find more. The search proves futile but Slim, left to guard the Galasphere, hears a strange noise and investigates. Unfortunately he falls, damaging his oxygen supply and comunicator and a race is on as Dart and Husky try to find him in time...

And The Moral Is:
You Can’t Light Hamlets Without Breaking Eggs

Today I Will Be Mostly Learning... :
There is very little water on Mars
Birds are not the only animals to lay eggs.

Huskyisms:
When asked how Titan looks on the astro-viewer, “It looks Titanic!”.
Husky also, very informally we feel, calls Dart by his first name.

Slimantics:
“This is a most unpleasant predicament.” & “Most extraordinary!”

Raeburnt:
“You’ve brought back the egg now you’ve got to bring back the bird.”

A Venusian Has...:
The ability to be perceptive... though it was quite obvious how angry the Martian President was.

Is This A Joke ?:
On being told that it is ‘dogs’ not birds that lay the eggs, Raeburn says “Don’t be funny, Dart.”
The Martian President also feels that his people will think ‘egg light’ a joke.

Riding Along In My Monobile... ‘:
Raeburn takes Dart and the egg to see Haggarty.

‘I’m An Alien!‘:
We never find out what the ‘Humming Dogs’ really are, apart from them laying eggs and having a curious wailing song. Oh, and cute flappy ears. We noticed they have sharp incisor teeth which would make them meat eaters too...

Ooh, Bitch... :
Raeburn: “You make me feel very stupid, Professor.” Haggarty: “You are, Colonel.”
Dart: “I’ve found an egg!” Raeburn: “Well go away and sit on it!” (We wonder how well that went down in America!)

Continuity:
The flight time from Titan is 41 days.
Cassie is still tending to the small Uranian plant.
There is a drought on Mars, refered to in subsequent episodes such as The Buried Spaceship.

2100 ?:
Gas is still available as a means of heat and light on Mars but it is considered primitive.

"If every house had one of these eggs,
you wouldn't have to pay for electricity any more."

Colonel Raeburn

Harmony For Strings:
Slim, having fallen into the cave, manages a nice crawl towards the ‘dogs nest’.

Take A Break:
Having promised the Martian President, Raeburn sends Dart on a mission to get more eggs from Titan.

Astro Viewer Working:
We get to see new footage of the crew in the freezer, with the unit dispensing mist.
Haggarty tells Cassie ‘Be careful how you water that plant.’ - almost intentionally funny as most of the water seen misses the pot altogether!

Hoorah!:
We liked the lighting in the Galasphere control room when Dart is left alone to see the egg in all its glory. We also like the fact that, otherwise, Husky and Slim would have left their captain sitting in the dark...
Slim, in communicating with the Humming Dogs, sings the four note signature theme of the series.

Boo!:
Titan, curiously, is depicted as asteroid-like when it is one of the bigger moons of the solar system.
The Martian President once again has his ‘Zeffer’ voice.
The Galasphere 024 launch is used.

Computer Central:
First screened: July 7th 1963 (ABC Midlands)
Running time: 25 minutes 5 seconds
The 'Humming Dogs' appear on the side of the Primrose Sweet Cigarettes box.
BFCC Classified - 26th February 1998
VHS - Volume 3
DVD - Complete Series Box Set, Disk 2

Listings
London, July 5th 1963. TWW Wales, December 18th 1963:
When Dart and his crew make an emergency landing on Titan to repair their galasphere, they make a curious and far-reaching discovery.

Ready To Lift ?:
A little contrived, and we never find out what happens to the ‘humming dogs’. Considering the care lavished on the rare Abas, their fate as battery-hens laying light producing eggs seems uncertain. That aside, somewhat inconsequential.

We close on the blazing sun in space before fading to a view of ringed planet Saturn. A gyroscope-like ship, enclosed in a flickering bubble of energy, speeds past us and beyond accompanied by almost musical radiophonic tones. We see it pass the Moon before spinning away to the twilight of the Earth's curved horizon... As we hear a grinding rhythmic electronic score, we see scenes of a futuristic city under a dramatic sky. Some buildings and antennae rotate, light pours from other structures as bullet-shaped and spherical vehicles move rapidly back and forth... 'This is Earth - the year 2100. New York is the headquarters of Space Patrol and men from Earth, Mars and Venus live and work there as guardians of peace. This is the story of those men, whose courage and daring make the universe safe for us all.'
