The Hairy Men Of Mars

Synopsis:
Galasphere 347 develops a fault and is forced to land in the unexplored Toohera region of Mars. There, Husky repairs the problem, then vanishes while exploring. Dart tries to find him but is captured by a large primitive humanoid who is also holding Husky in a cave. The Martian takes a shine to Dart and lets him and Husky go with a gift of fruit which will apparently make them as hairy as himself. Back on Earth, Raeburn decides the fruit will be the ideal solution to Haggarty’s balding... but with unexpected results!

And The Moral Is:
Hair Today, Long Tomorrow

Slimantics:
To Husky “You are always thinking about sustainance.”

Huskyisms:
To which Husky replies, “I’m not! I’m always thinking about food.”

Gabblings:
To a long haired Haggarty "I like you with long hair! You look almost as pretty as me!"
"I'm the most courageous, heroic, daring, bold, plucky bird in the world!" gets the prompt from Dart that Gabbler adds, "I know. I'm a coward too!"

“Don’t Call Me Pop!”:
Haggarty is back under his hair restorer.

Is This A Joke ?:
Raeburn doesn’t believe Dart’s tale of the ‘Hairy Men of Mars’.

‘Riding Along In My Monobile... ‘:
Dart travels to give Haggarty the Toohera fruit, and again to see Haggarty when the fruit takes effect.

‘I’m An Alien!‘:
This time, the primitive Martian takes a fancy to Dart as he has facial hair. But they consider ‘hairless men’ (modern Martians?) their enemy.

Ooh, Bitch...:
Dart (about Gabbler): “I can hear big mouth coming!”
He also quips, when Gabbler is made invisible, that Zeffer should invent a machine that enables them to see the bird but not hear him.

Continuity:
There are several references to the episode Husky Becomes Invisible.
When Husky disobeys Dart to explore, Dart says he’ll stop the Martian’s leave for two years.

Plot Device:
At least this time, having already used Zeffer’s invisibility machine to once steal Aba eggs, they use the same method.

Harmony For Strings:
The Aba manages a convincing pursuit of its egg.

"They were killed because they had no hair,
and hairless men are their enemies."
Husky, on the fate of others at the hands of the 'Hairy Men'

Haven’t I Seen... ?:
The establishing shot of the Hairy Man’s cave is that of the cave on Uranus in The Invisible Invasion and The Jitter Waves. The Duo in the forest is a dead giveaway!
The hairy man himself was the giant alien from The New Planet.

Take A Break:
Having made an uneasy 'friendship' with the Martian primitive, Husky tells Dart they are free to go. Dart says "Let's do it before he changes his mind.".

For Those Of You Just Joining Us... :
Professor Zeffer explains to Dart and Gabbler about his invisibility process again.

Astro Viewer Working:
As with The New Planet, the shoes of Dart and Husky are white in some shots when they are superimposed. This does lead to some odd continuity as their shoes change from dark to light from scene to scene.

Hoorah!:
When trying to coerse Gabbler back into Zeffer’s invisibility machine, Dart gives the cheeky unseen bird a slap across the back of the head!

Boo!:
When landing on Mars, Galasphere 347 appears to land on a large branch that shakes as the ship hits it!
The same footage is then played backwards when the Galasphere departs, making it look like the branch shakes the ship off!
It is not explained why they need to wear molungs in the Toohera jungle, when other visits to Mars (as well as later in this same episode) it isn’t necessary.

Computer Central:

Listings
London, May 7th 1964:
Professor Haggarty tries a special hair resoring treatment which Dart has brought from Mars.
Tyne Tees, May 18th 1964:
Due to a fault in the Meson Power in their Galasphere, Dart and his crew have to land in the Toohera Jungle, an unexplored part of Mars, inhabited by hairy ape-like men who are afraid of any creature that is hairless.

Ready To Lift ?:
Another rehashed idea, with the Aba and invisibility from Husky Becomes Invisible tagged on to an all to brief and undeveloped story about the Martian primitives. An intentionally comic episode (one would hope) with some superb humour - especially concerning Gabbler - but lacking in originality.

We close on the blazing sun in space before fading to a view of ringed planet Saturn. A gyroscope-like ship, enclosed in a flickering bubble of energy, speeds past us and beyond accompanied by almost musical radiophonic tones. We see it pass the Moon before spinning away to the twilight of the Earth's curved horizon... As we hear a grinding rhythmic electronic score, we see scenes of a futuristic city under a dramatic sky. Some buildings and antennae rotate, light pours from other structures as bullet-shaped and spherical vehicles move rapidly back and forth... 'This is Earth - the year 2100. New York is the headquarters of Space Patrol and men from Earth, Mars and Venus live and work there as guardians of peace. This is the story of those men, whose courage and daring make the universe safe for us all.'
