The Jitter Waves

Synopsis:
Areas on Earth at the same latitude as Space Headquarters are experiencing ‘jittering’ - localised earthquakes of unknown origin. Jim Barratt at the Underwater Sea Farm tells Raeburn that the robots there are behaving strangely every twenty four hours but the cause is not on Earth. The Duos on Uranus are sending radio waves that are causing the jittering and a method must be found of stopping them before the cities are levelled by the artificial earthquakes...

And The Moral Is:
There’s Nothing Quite Like Getting Your Own Back

Today I Will Be Mostly Learning... :
It takes radio waves two and a half hours to travel from Earth to Uranus.
If reflected, they can build up like a continuous echo (feedback).

Huskyisms:
“I’m beard” (instead of ‘bored’)

Slimantics:
"My instruments do not read any unusual phenomena.”

Raeburnt:
“The less Duos there are, the happier I’ll be.”

A Venusian Has...:
The ability to take leave, even if it is for only half an episode.

“Don’t Call Me Pop!”:
Haggarty is so excited at discovering the cause of the jittering, he doesn’t realise Cassie is calling him Pop!

To Coin A Phrase:
Dart: “If you can’t solve this, it’s no relection on you.” Haggarty: “It’s nice of you to say so but... shaking shamrocks! I’ve found it... the solution!”
And in a longer conversation, Gabbler gives Haggarty and Cassie a clue about the nature of the ‘quakes’.

Riding Along In My Monobile... ‘:
Raeburn visits Haggarty

Is This A Joke ?:
Raeburn thinks Haggarty is joking when he first mentions the jittering and that it is just an excuse for not being able to make a meringue.
Dart thinks Raeburn is joking when briefed on his mission to find the cause of the jittering.

‘I’m An Alien!‘:
Martians, including the Dictum Birds, don’t get electric shocks as easily as humans.
The Duo minds can also be sent out of their bodies to spy on others unseen.
According to Husky, two and a half hours is 'just long enough to have a snack'!

Ooh, Bitch...:
Gabbler “Hello everybody! I’ve come to talk to you.” Haggarty: “That’s what I was afraid of.”

Continuity:
Marla is on holiday for the first part of the story and Mak, a type one robot, takes her place.
It takes the waves from Uranus two and a half hours to travel to Earth.

Plot Device:
A mirror like device makes another appearance

Haven’t I Seen... ?:
The destruction of the building was first used in Mystery On The Moon.
The Neptunians artificial planet (DW) is seen in the Duos cave as part of their device.
A lot of the footage of the Uranian ship is from The Invisible Invasion, as is almost all of the ‘seek and destroy’ chase with the Galasphere.

Take A Break:
As another jittering attack starts, Raeburn calls on Haggarty who comments "If you let me get some sleep, I'll do some more experimenting in the morning."

"Something which is making buildings jitter, and robots crazy."
Raeburn, when asked by Larry Dart when he's looking for.

For Those Of You Just Joining Us... :
When Raeburn tells Dart the waves are coming from Uranus, Dart responds, "The Duos again!".

Astro Viewer Working:
Raeburn smokes a pipe.
Jim Barratt appears to have lost his moustache.
The crew, when relaxing, appear to be drinking wine.
For one line Gabbler, saying 'You look ridiculous!' as he watches Haggarty and Cassie quaking, seems to speak in Libby Morris' natural voice.

Hoorah!:
The final shot of the Duo leader and his minions amidst the devestation in the cave is a simple yet fitting conclusion to their attempts to attack Earth.

Boo!:
Where are the Duos getting their technology from?

Computer Central:

London, April 23rd 1964:
Once a day the Earth begins to shake violently. Professor Haggarty finds out the cause of this phenomenon but how is it to be stopped?

Ready To Lift ?:
An interesting end to the trilogy of Duo episodes but another hybrid episode, mixing elements of The Invisible Invasion and Mystery On The Moon with glossier production. Above average, but nothing special.

We close on the blazing sun in space before fading to a view of ringed planet Saturn. A gyroscope-like ship, enclosed in a flickering bubble of energy, speeds past us and beyond accompanied by almost musical radiophonic tones. We see it pass the Moon before spinning away to the twilight of the Earth's curved horizon... As we hear a grinding rhythmic electronic score, we see scenes of a futuristic city under a dramatic sky. Some buildings and antennae rotate, light pours from other structures as bullet-shaped and spherical vehicles move rapidly back and forth... 'This is Earth - the year 2100. New York is the headquarters of Space Patrol and men from Earth, Mars and Venus live and work there as guardians of peace. This is the story of those men, whose courage and daring make the universe safe for us all.'
