Cast 2002 The Wight Strollers were formed by pupils and friends of the Nesta Meech Dance School, following Miss Meech's retirement in 1980. They were keen to continue with fund raising for local charities and other worthwhile causes by means of musical productions and pantomimes, producing their first pantomime "CINDERELLA" in 1981. The Wight Strollers are managed by a committee nominated at its annual general meeting, and consists of a Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer and nine other members. The committe meets every month of the year to ensure that all productions that are put on have the fullest input from all the different sections of the company, to make our shows as near proffessional as possible. The cast are then brought together in September, the characters sorted out and rehearsals commence. The company comprising of upwards of fifty persons ranging in age from our 'baby' group of 5 year olds through to those around 'bus pass' age, contains many family groups and in one case three generations in the same show, which proves that the company has a definite family appeal. The company draws it's members from all parts of the Island and performs mainly at The Medina Theatre in Newport, with summer shows additionally being presented at Ventnor Winter Gardens and The Memorial Hall Freshwater. The dedication of all involved is tremendous, giving up time every week for approximately four and a half months each year to bring what we believe is one of the best Pantomimes on the Island. Scripts, scenery, costumes and props are all produced in the main, by the members of the company, and with show expenses being kept to a minimum, this allows maximum donations to charities. The company has no permanent base of its own, (although we would like one) relying on the hire of church and other halls for rehearsals. We have however, recently purchased a permanent store for scenery and props which are vital for our productions. |
