One of the early ones was Guillemot, now in the UK. I first became intrigued by this boat when they were being built in FRP by a company in mid coast Maine. I really felt the boat would be better built in wood as she was designed that way. I eventually got a license from John Watkinson and started building and selling them. The last built was in 1986 when the small fiberglass day sailors hit the market. It was hard to compete on price with those. So at that time I put all the molds and jigs away for safe keeping in hopes that some day the great little boat would resurface. Well with the article in "Good Old Boat" she has resurfaced. I just finished my first one in 20 years for a customer in Albuquerque, New Mexico and have found a fair amount of interest, but no further sales as yet. I also build a number of small production boats from rowing shells to outrigger canoes and yacht tenders. I am in the process of doing a web page for East West which will feature the wood Drascombes." |
