The Dalston Street Works
The
Dalston Street Works in Tyssen Street was opened by the Marconi Wireless
Telegraph Company in 1905. The four storied building had three wings
and was equipped with equipment taken from the New Street works in
Chelmsford. It took over the role of Hall Street in the manufacture
of Ignition coils for the Marconi Spark transmitters and of paper
capacitors. It
later began mass production of ignition coils for use in the expanding
automobile industry. The pictures on the left shows the ignition department
machine shop at Dalston Street, where girls work on the manufacture
of mounting boxes. The machine shop has a single line-shaft supplying
the drills, while the presses are hand operated. The picture to the
right shows the assembling room.
