The New Street site was opened in Chelmsford in 1912 in time for the International Telegraphic Conference. It followed on from the factory in Hall Street which was becoming too small. Here I take a look at the construction of the new factory and the visit of delegates on the opening day.

As the new medium developed, so also did the need for new departments. From the early days of telegraph, there followed sound broadcast, radar and television. Marine and Aeronautical divisions are formed. This section covers the history of the different departments.

A view of some of the 500 men who were involved in building the Marconi Works at New St.  Despite a strike, the work was completed in 17 weeks in time to entertain delegates to the International Telegraphic Conference of June/July 1912, in London.
