49 Squadron was formed on the 15th April 1916 as a bomber squadron and served in France and Flanders throughout WW1.
The Squadron was posted to Germany in May 1919 as part of the Army of occupation before being disbanded in July 1919.

The Squadron was reformed in 1936 at R.A.F. Bircham Newton flying Hawker Hinds converting to Hampdens then Manchesters and later Lancasters, the Squadron did convert to Lincolns after the war.

The Squadron was sent to Kenya in 1953 flying bombing and reconnaissance flights during the Mau Mau uprising.

The Squadron was disbanded in August 1955.

The Squadron was reformed on the 1st May 1956 at R.A.F. Wittering flying Valiants.

The Squadron took part in the British nuclear bomb tests at Christmas Island in 1956/57 and dropped the first British hydrogen bomb.

The Squadron was disbanded in May 1965.
