The Squadron was reformed in May 1941 as a bomber squadron flying Halifaxes and started operations on the night 12th/13th June 1941.
On the night 10th/11th April 1942 the squadron made history by dropping the first 8000lb high capacity bomb during a raid on Essen.
It was also involved in the attacks on the Tirpitz in March and April 1942 and the heavy raid on Peedemunde in August 1943.
In May 1945 the unit transferred to Transport Command and converted to Dakotas before moving to India in 1946 and being renumbered 62 Squadron.
76 Squadron was reformed in December 1953 as a light bomber unit flying Camberras until it was disbanded again in December 1960.
