Lewis Lodge, 872
Lewis Lodge, 872

Constituted: 30th September 1861.

A daughter Lodge of Sun, Square and Compasses Lodge No 119.

The lodge was initially numbered 1174 but changed to 872 in 1863.

They originally met in the Freemasons Hall, College Street, Whitehaven before moving into their own building, Masonic Hall, Duke Street, Whitehaven (where they still meet today), which had previously been used as a Catholic Church in 1871. They bought the premises in 1909, the building was then extended by the addition of a upper storey which enabled them to divide the building into separate rooms for a temple, dining room, kitchen and toilets, they also installed the very modern (at the time) electric lighting.

The lodge sponsored the following lodges:
Kenlis Lodge, No 1267 in Egremont.
Temperantia Lodge, No 2854 in Whitehaven.
Scawfell Lodge, No 3768 in Seascale.
