William was born on the 16th February 1803 at Nether Wasdale, Cumberland. He was the illegitimate son of Jane Mossop (nee Hodgson).
He was baptised on the 18th February 1803 at St Michaels and All Saints, Nether Wasdale.
On the 1841 census he is shown living at Ribton Moorside with his wife and children.
He married Ann Douby on the 17th March 1826 at St Johns, Hensingham, Cumberland. She had been born in Hensingham abt 1808.

He died in 49 Bowthorn Road, Cleator Moor, Cumberland on the 10th February 1879, his burial took place on the 13th February 1879 in St Johns Churchyard, Cleator Moor, he has no headstone.
Ann died in Hensingham on the 24th October 1875, her burial took place on the 26th October in Hensingham cemetery, she has no headstone.
On the 1851 and 1861 census he is shown living at Ribton Moorside, Hensingham with his wife and daughter.
On the 1871 census he is shown living at Ribton Moorside with his wife, daughter and grandson.
