INSTRUCTORS PROFILE'S

CARL GRANT
(2nd Dan)

Carl has been an first class student of Goshinkwai, starting at age 21, training at Newport at Pontypool clubs. He has now established himself as a senior instrcutor and continues to demonstrate has real passion for his training. His superb sports fitness knowledge is utilised every week when he takes the class warm up and the senior boxing and fitness classes.
Carl states......The first time I saw goshinkwai was at Llantarnem School, Cwmbran. A year later I started at Newport but I stopped briefly to concentrate on my other passion, rugby! My brother Dennis was the boxer of the family, he started at school boy level and went on to be 6 times Welsh School boy champion and one time British. He boxed for the Army and then for the prison National side, which he now helps to coach

I my self
never boxed competitively but have always trained with him since
I was 12 years old. My love for rugby stopped me boxing, as I
played for Pontypool Youth and then Cwmbran seniors. I later went
to Ebbw Vale for 2yrs and came back to Newport to finish with
Newport Saracens. At the age of 30, I injured my knee, which
prompted me to give up rugby and go back to Goshinkwai. I spent a
year training at Newport and then joined Risca under Alun.

Because I have always trained and played sports, I bring a lot of experience when taking fitness or boxing training, combining that with Goshinkwai is very exciting which I'm enjoying very much. Have two Girls Leah 13 and Zara 10 both members of the Risca Dojo and both been training 3yrs and I'm very pleased the way they have come, they are confident, physically fit and very good at school.

Goshinkwai Yawara has definitely had a big impact on their life. Since starting martial arts I always set myself goals in work and leisure and my concentration span is very good and I'm able to carry stress related problems a lot longer. Two of my goals is to get both my daughters to dan grades and for me to be doing some form of training at 80yrs old.
