TVC History

A (very) brief history of the club

THE READING BARBERSHOP HARMONY CLUB was formed in 1974. The Club's Chorus is known as The Thames Valley Chorus (TVC) and is one of the top Barbershop Choruses in the United Kingdom.

We have performed on TV, Radio and many stage venues throughout the country, including 'Proms in the Park' in Hyde Park (September 1998), and have represented the UK in the World Barbershop Championships (California, 1999), and sung successfully in competitions all over Europe. We sing a wide variety of music, songs old and new.

The Club presents its own concerts throughout the Thames Valley area several times a year.

Barbershop singing is a unique, unaccompanied form of harmony, which can be performed with any number of singers from 4 upwards. The songs are all performed, not just sung, a feature that not only makes for terrific entertainment, but also, through competitions such as the Sainsbury's Choir of the Year', is now rubbing off on all other forms of choral singing. Our Chorus' 70 singers demonstrate how good this can be in a repertoire that features jazz and blues songs, as well as many tunes from Shows and 'Pop' from the 1920's onwards.

The Chorus has been established since 1974, and boasts a membership from all over the Thames Valley and Greater London area. We have been a finalist in every one of the national British Barbershop Championships since then, and in the last 10 years we have virtually never been out of the top 5 positions. Which makes us the most consistent top performing National Barbershop Chorus.

A TVC Leaflet has been lovingly produced to further describe our history, present and future activities
