It has rightly been claimed that Ampthill has a more interesting and significant history than most towns of much larger size. its inhabitants are rightly proud of its past and anxious to share their heritage. And many books have been written on its rich history, alas many have long been out of print.

"The Knoll: A Mirror for
Ampthill" by
Barry Dackombe
(2000)
"a unique and remarkable record of a
major part of Ampthill's development which will be
of interest and increasing value to future
generations"
Originally part of Ampthill's extensive Warren,
the area was awarded to the local feoffee's as part
of the parish enclosure. after 80 years they sold
the land for development at an auction in the White
Hart, and The Knoll became one of the first areas
to be subjected to the newly created Urban District
Council's building bye-laws, despite the lack of
adequate services in the town.
'The Knoll: A Mirror for Ampthill' provides a
fascinating insight into the development of The
Knoll and Ampthill, together with the important
role played by its inhabitants. in addition there
are detailed descriptions of the individual plots
and known residents.

"17th Century Ampthill
& Hugh Reeve 'its true & lawfull Parson''
by
Andrew Underwood
(2000)
Hugh Reeve stood firm against
persecution from some of his articulate and
influential parishioners of an opposing religious
standpoint, who petitioned parliament for his
removal and were almost certainly responsible for
the Parsonage being burnt down. Dramatic times!
This history covers all aspects of everyday life
in 17th century Ampthill (including the Civil War)
and sets the scene by looking back to the days of
Queen Katherine of Aragon's residence in the town.
