In the Apiary - Year End 2001

In the Apiary year ending 2001

Not really 'In the Apiary' but more 'in the office' and 'in the workshop' All the hive records can now be consolidated so that each colony can be evaluated and the queen's future be decided. The extra brood boxes and supers which I bought have now all been converted to top space but I think I may have been a bit too hasty to complete the task in the light of the following. At the Essex Beekeepers Annual Conference we had Robin Dartington speaking so enthusiastically about his Dartington 'long hive' that I intend to give it a try. Making one is going to take some time and I will need to buy more frames to covert to the National 14x12s. This is not a bad thing because I can start by gradually moving my conventional Nationals over to this size by nailing a shallow box beneath each present brood box. I have been bothered with pollen storage up in the supers resulting in less nectar space. Once a cell has been used for pollen, the bees continue with this usage and even scraping back the comb doesn't cure the problem. The only answer is new foundation which is more cost and more time. The reason for pollen storing in the supers is lack of space in the brood box so hopefully moving to 14x12 will overcome this problem. Does anybody have any experience?
