In the Apiary - September

Week Ending September 8th 2001

All the supers have now been cleaned by the bees and it falls to me to scrape all the extra wax and propolis from them and store them away for winter. Many of the frames have pollen stored in them which is taking up valuable honey space. I have tried scraping them back to the foundation but when the bees draw out the replacement comb they still use the same cells for pollen. I guess it will have to be new foundation. This problem goes back several years so I have a lot of frames needing this process. All the Miller feeders are now in place and ready for the winter feed. These feeders are basically a shallow wooden tank which sits on the top of the hive and has access for the bees to suck up the liquid feed without drowning themselves. They can then take this down and store it in the comb in the brood box.
