This painting will be slightly wider than this making a panorama picture. I was lucky enough to witness this scene at Liberty's Raptor and Reptile centre, two African Tawny Eagles were being flown as a pair. The male took the lure and the female floored him. This is natural behaviour in the wild since to rear chicks and have them survive the male must be prepared to give up his food for her. Neither eagle comes to any harm from this but it does make for a dramatic painting. So far the birds have been drawn in and some of the background filled in by airbrush to give a dust cloud effect.
Some of the background colours have been introduced to give me a feel of the overall colour depth and the birds start to come alive a little. This is the hardest stage of the painting due to the temptation to rush it. I am never satisfied at this point.
The detail on the feathers is now being put in from right to left and the birds start to come to life. This is the fun bit, time consuming though .To build up the detail to the correct level will take a full week.
Close up showing the right hand side of the picture with the feather detail in place. There will probably be some further changes to this when the painting nears completion and I can stand back and see it as a whole.
The finished painting. Title: Floored. |
