Ed's Trade Mark Series

General Information

Ed's Trade Mark Series is a range of booklets that are available to purchase. They focus entirely on trade marks connected with beer, whisky, smoking and other subjects, each dealing exclusively with its own particular topic.

This is not an in-depth study of the subject. It is merely a glimpse of a bygone era as seen through the delightful illustrations that, in most cases, adorned the bottles and packets so familiar to our forebears. In short, this is an adventure into the past.

Each page of each booklet is packed with illustrations - there is little text to wade through, except for a few words accompanying each trade mark. The booklets will be of interest to anyone keen to delve into the past, but they will hold a particular attraction for those interested in any aspect of ale or beer and breweriana, collectors of bottle labels, whisky buffs, matchbox and cigarette packet collectors, paper ephemera collectors, and those who love rooting around in the dustbin of the Victorian period and beyond.

Victorian whisky bottle label

Author, Edward Burns, was born in Glasgow and became a graduate of the University of Glasgow. In his spare time he has been known to dig whopping great holes in the ground to uncover Victorian/Edwardian bottles and clay tobacco pipes. He has previously written articles on clay tobacco pipes, been a regular contributor to The Glasgow Guzzler, written an article for The Herald titled The Perfect Pub, produced booklets on Scottish Brewery Trade Marks, and in 1995 published the book, It's a bad thing whisky, especially Bad Whisky (commonly referred to as BAD WHISKY), which was short-listed for the Andre Simon Memorial Fund Book Awards. He is currently a member of the Campaign for Real Ale, has completed a book on Ale in Stirling (due to be published soon), and is Editor of the Scottish Brewing Archive's Annual Journal.
