When the NEW SERIES was authorised in 1872, the earliest of the OLD SERIES maps were already 70 years old and had been subjected to repeated revision.

The Old Sheets 91-110 were renumbered 1-73 (reversing the previous S to N numbering) and issued as "New Series" with little updating. New Sheets 74-360 (the area of Old Sheets 1-90) were completely redrawn from a survey authorised in the 1860's The resultant sheets published between 1874 and 1896 were the NEW SERIES-FIRST EDITION. A further revision of 1893-98 produced the NEW SERIES-SECOND EDITION between 1895 and 1904, and finally a revision of 1901-12 produced the NEW SERIES-THIRD EDITION. THIRD EDITION, ORDNANCE SURVEY.
