Directions

There are lots of ways of getting to East Brent. Unfortunately, almost all of them are comedy options, such as on the back of a kidnapped Weston donkey. These are not included on this page. This leaves you with the easy way (by car) and the hard ways (public transport). Take your pick!

Photo tours

To help you find your way around, there are two photo tours you can take a look at (well, squint at).

Get me to the church on time (112k of pictures) corresponds roughly to the directions below for finding the church in a car. Indeed, links within those directions take you to the relevant sections of this tour.

Let's all go on a toilet hunt (40k of pictures) shows you what to look for when you're desperate.

Route planning

If you are lucky/rich enough to have exceptionally specific route-planning software, it will help you to know that if St. Mary's Church had a postcode, it would be TA9 4HZ.

For everyone else, we can heartily recommend The AA's online route planner, which will pepper your route with plenty of landmarks to keep you orientated. Unfortunately, it's not that specific, so this page concentrates on the last little bit of the journey: from the M5 to the church.

From the M5 to East Brent

  1. Leave the M5 at Junction 22. As the slip road approaches Edithmead roundabout, get in the right-hand lane.
  2. At the roundabout, take the 3rd exit, signposted Weston-S-Mare, Bristol (South) & Airport, etc.
  3. You will pass the Fox and Goose pub on your right and Brent Knoll (village and hill) on your left. As you approach the next roundabout, you will pass the Brent House restaurant on your left. Get in the left-hand lane.
  4. At the roundabout, take the 1st exit, which is more-or-less straight on. You will be approaching East Brent from the south.

Finding the Church

  1. At the traffic lights, follow the sign for East Brent (!), Brent Knoll, Berrow and Brean. In other words:
    • From the South: Turn left.
    • From the North: Turn right.
You will pass the Methodist chapel immediately on your right. If you pass the village hall and see the pub up ahead, you're going the wrong way.
  2. Follow the road around a gentle bend to the left. You will see the butcher's (a white building) ahead of you.
  3. Follow the road around a sharp bend to the right. Church Road is immediately on your left as you pass the butchers.
  4. BUT parking is limited up Church Road, so you're better off continuing down Brent Road and taking the second turning on the left after Church Road. This turning is a tiny little country lane that goes over the hill. Don't panic: you're only on it for a few hundred yards.
  5. As you begin your ascent, you will pass a house on your left. Immediately after the house is a turning on the left that becomes a very short drive marked East Brent Cemetery. The gate to the cemetary car park is kept shut, so you'll need to hop out and open it. The spring on the gate latch is stiff: don't be frightened to give it a good hard tug.
  6. Having parked your car, follow the path through the bottom of cemetary to the top of the churchyard. The path continues down the north side of the church: just follow it round to the church porch on the south side.

By public transport

Trains and buses

The two nearest train stations are Highbridge (unmanned, not well served) and Weston-Super-Mare (manned and well served).

The local bus company is Badgerline. The 102 bus leaves Weston High Street and Grand Central at 13:00 and arrives at East Brent at 13:16, near the pub (see map). The return journey leaves East Brent at 16:39 and arrives in Weston at 16:55. The same 102 bus also runs from Highbridge Station at 12:10 to East Brent at 12:39, with a return service leaving East Brent at 17:26 and arriving at Highbridge Station at 17:56.

Planes and buses

The nearest airport is Bristol International at Lulsgate. There is no direct bus service between Bristol International Airport and East Brent, but Badgerline do run the 121 service between the Airport and Weston-Super-Mare. The bus leaves the airport at 11:25 and arrives at Weston High Street at 12:25. The 102 bus leaves Weston High Street at 13:00 and arrives at East Brent at 13:16, near the pub (see map). The return 102 service leaves East Brent at 16:39 and arrives in Weston at 16:55; unfortunately, the return 121 service does not run to the airport again for the rest of the day.
