Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria is  situated between 3 continents, Africa, Europe and the Americas, benefitting from the Gulf flow and landscape around the island. The north is usually cooler than the south which is dryer and which can sometimes become very hot.   Inner regions, being mountainous, can be cloudier and colder with more rain.

Most holidaymakers coming to the island usually choose to stay in one of the resorts along the South coast. The main resorts  are San Agustin, Playa del Ingles, Maspalomas and Puerto Rico. Puerto de Mogan,  is a very picturesque port and well worth a visit.
Las Palmas is the capital city with some excellent shops  and there is Las Canteras beach for relaxing.
The island’s west coast is rugged and beautiful and a National Park Area.  At Maspalomas are the rolling sand dunes, the
Dunes Nature Reserve, which is a protected area of more than 4000 hectares.   Here can be found a  lagoon, marshland and a palm fringed oasis.  There is also a golf course and luxury hotels. Puerto Rico in the south of the island is a more lively area suitable for families, couples and younger age groups.  It is a very hilly area, not so suitable for those who find walking difficult.  It has a Commercial Centre with lots of shops, bars and restaurants. There is a sandy man made beach.     Nearby Playa de los Amadores is a perfect place for watching the sunset behind the neighbouring island of Tenerife.
