Majorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands, its sister islands being Menorca and Ibiza, it lies in the Mediterranean Sea off the south east coast of mainland Spain. To fly to the island takes approximately 2 hrs from the UK with the airport being just outside Palma the capital of the island. The airport is extremely large and modern and has one of the longest walks between check in desks and departure gates, there are moving walkways to make the distance a little easier to manage. The airport has lots of facilities with nice shops and cafes. Once outside the airport the journey through the capital Palma is a lovely site with the 14 Century Gothic Cathedral standing above the capital. On the opposite side is the sophisticated harbour . Depending on which part of the island you head for, each side has a different aspect. The East side is very pretty with farmland and olive groves, lemon and orange trees and in Spring time awash with beautiful wild flowers ranging from wild poppy fields to masses of large white and yellow daisies. There are a lot of windmills dotted on the land leading from Palma airport. There are numerous hidden little coves with pretty beaches. Cala Bona, Cala Millor and Cala d'Or are some of the prettiest and favourable. The North coast is rugged with the Sierra Traumontana mountain range. The land is set in tiers on which the locals grow their produce. One of the prettiest resorts is Puerto Pollensa which has a beautiful long sandy beach and clear water. There are lots of pretty little villages. The mountain range follows through along the West side of the island and this area is much greener with lots of orange and lemon groves. The South coast of the island has a more lively and vibrant atmosphere and perhaps more suited to the younger generation or those who seek a more active nightlife.
