Fun
References
Throughout the years there have been
a number of light-hearted references to the Paul is Dead legend, some
even from the man himself! This page is dedicated to all the references
and tributes that have been made in reference to the conspiracy.
Paul
McCartney in the Simpsons
Paul
and Linda McCartney guest-starred in the Simpsons episode where
she becomes a vegetarian. Apparently he likes to visit Apu's garden
every once in a while (and probably when he wants to watch drive-in
movies for free). During his conversation with Lisa Paul says that
if you play his song 'Maybe I'm Amazed' backwards you'd hear a receipe
for a 'really ripping lentil soup' and indeed, when this song is
played during the final credits, you can hear small snippets of
backwards dialogue that outlines such a recipe. There is one audio
clip which is obviously poking fun at the Paul is Dead conspiracy
hidden within it where Paul says "Oh, and by the way, I'm alive."

Batman
Solves the Mystery
In
June, 1970 PiD fans were highly amused when buying their copy of
issue 222 of the Batman comic because it shows our hero the caped
crusader taking on an eeriely similar mystery and solving it by
page 16. A very entertaining read and scans of the entire story
can be found at THIS link! |

Stig
Has Been Dead For Ages, Honestly
In
1978 a movie was released called "All You Need is Cash",
a comedy 'mockumentry' about a fictional band of the 60's - a legend
that will last a lunchtime. Yes, I'm referring to the Rutles, a
brilliant film that pokes fun at the life of the Beatles. One area
they touched on in true comedy style was the 'Paul is Dead' legend
and wound it around the groups lead guitarist Stig O'Hara. The story
put forward was that Stig had been killed in 1969 in a flash fire
in a waterbed shop and had been replaced by a wax replica that had
been made by Madame Tussauds. Seveal so-called 'facts' also came
about to help the rumour. First, he never said anything in public.
Even as the "quiet" one he had not said a word since 1962.
Secondly, on the cover of their then latest album, Shabby Road,
he was wearing no trousers, and old Italian way of indicating death.
Thirdly, Nasty supposedly sings "I buried Stig" on the
song I Am The Waitress from the Tragical History Tour album. In
fact he sings "E burres stigano" which is very bad spanish
for "Have you a water buffalo?" Fourthly, on the Sgt.
Rutter album he was leaning in the exact position of a dying Yeti
(from the Rutland Book of the Dead). And finally, if you sing the
title of "Sgt. Rutter's Only Darts Club Band" backwards
it is supposed to sound very like "Stig has been dead for ages
honestly". In fact it sounds uncannily like "dnab bulc
strad ylno srettur tnaegres". |

Paul's
Tombstone
Every
year the TV show 'The Simpsons' has a halloween special, known as
the Treehouse of Horror. The first time they did the special the
credits started with the camera panning through a graveyard. Watch
closely and you'll see that one of the gravestones is for none other
than Paul McCartney. |

Don't
Lose Your Head Over It
In
1969 a life-size billboard of the Beatles album 'Abbey Road' was
erected on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. Soon after it was put
up however some wag, most probably in response to the increasing
wave of 'Paul is Dead' hysteria at the time, went and cut the head
off of McCartney, supposedly symbolising his decapitiation in the
crash. Oddly, this vandalism was never repaired and Paul remained
headless until the advertisement was taken down. |

Celebrity Deathmatch
The
Beatles were pitted against each other in this MTV classic, and
had a number of Paul is Dead mentions in it. Firstly, when Ringo
punches Paul off the ring and into the crowd the placard he's
impaled on has "29 IF" written on it - a play on from
the 'LMW 281F' numberplate on Abbey Road. "Incredible!"
says the commentator, "it looks like Paul may be dead!"
However, when Paul walks back onto the ring the commentator says
"Paul may not be dead after all!" After Paul smashes
John's arm with his silver hammer, John appears to say something
in reverse (which is just him saying 'I Buried Paul'). They run
the sentence backwards and John says "I buried Paul. There
I admit it. I'll even tell you where at. Behind Abbey Road Studios.
It was great fun." The clip is out there if you know where
to look. |
