Free as a Bird

The Crash Scene
In 1995 Yoko Ono gave Paul some rough demo tapes that John Lennon had recorded in the 70's. These tapes ultimately became 'new' Beatle works Free As a Bird and Real Love. The music video for Free As a Bird contained a multitude of references and it's become a sort of game to see just how many different Beatles songs have been hidden via symbolism within. There is one part however that is very interesting, and that's just after George walks into the Savile Row Apple offices. The camera pans past a police van (like like the one on the Abbey Road cover) and then focuses onto a car crash. A crowd of people are around and there's a line of police around the accident. An obviously distressed woman then comes into shot before the camera flies off. This is quite an accurate representation of Paul's crash and must have been intentionally placed, but was this for fun or did it have a more sinister meaning? Click on the photo to the left to watch that part of the music video.

Paul's Mangled Head
Did you see that flash of white in the window of the police van when you watched the video clip for the last clue? If not, watch it again and look closely at what's reflected back at you. It looks a lot like the mangled, decapitated head of Paul! Why would such an image be almost subliminally shown to the view just before a scene of a car crash appears?

The Sheepdog
As the priest walks away from the camera in the graveyard (a reference to Eleanor Rigby - "Father Mackenzie, wiping the dirt from his hands as he walks from the grave") Paul's sheepdog Martha suddenly runs across the screen. Has she come looking for her owner?

The Car
Near the end of the music video the shot pans down to the Abbey Road zebra crossing. As the camera pans down however a car is shown driving over exactly where Paul was standing on the front cover. Was this intentional and a reference to the car crash that allegedly killed Paul?
