Overview
In 1990 a group of dedicated parents decided to give their children the opportunity to take part in equestrian activities not always catered for by a "Senior" riding club. The Severn Valley Junior Riding Club was born. (We feel that the essence of the club is captured in the minutes of the first club meeting, which note our determination to put on a schedule of events with no outside financial assistance and not very much equipment.)
For six years the upper age limit for joining the Club was 17, but on 22nd March, 1996 a decision was made to raise this to 21. In October 2003, after several poor years following the foot and mouth crisis, the decision was taken to remove any upper age limit and also remove the word "Junior" from the Club title.
Severn Valley Riding Club will continue to run a junior section for those under 17 on 1st January in a particular year.
Each year throughout the summer we run 3 shows, open to all ages - 3 to 90 - catering for jumping, in hand showing and ridden showing, while most classes have separate sections for lead-rein, juniors and seniors. We also have gymkhana games and handy pony as well as a horse and hound class in the clear round jumping ring.
During the year we also hold an Open Dressage competition and, in the autumn, a Hunter Trials.
The Club is affiliated to the British Horse Society through their Riding Clubs office. For competition purposes we are in Area 18 which includes clubs from Worcestershire, Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire and Shropshire. For the past 10 years we have run the Indoor Novice Show Jumping Qualifier for our area at Gracelands Equestrian Centre in February or March, which always attracts a large turnout and a very enjoyable day. That event is for teams only, but all other riding club competitions are for teams and individuals.
