At
the junction of City Road and Newport Road, opposite Cardiff Royal
Infirmary just outside the city centre, is the Parish Church of
St James the Great. Tredegarville
Aided Primary School is just behind the church. Both are in
West Adamsdown community re-generation area.
Admiral
House, a former office block, the church's nearest neighbour has
recently been transformed into apartments. The hospital across
the road is also going through major changes in use. In the summer
of 2006, church halls were demolished to improve access to the
church building and offer additional playground space to the school.
A
feasibility study in 2005 showed how the church could be
made useable for educational, social and leisure activities by
local community groups. Pews were removed from the nave aiming
to attract local groups to use it for social activities in the
service of district short of such public amenities.
Sadly, the Parish and the worshipping community
of St. James could no longer afford to maintain the building.
Financial backing for repairs (£75,000) and the estimated
minimum of £15,000 per annum essential running costs remained
out of reach.
Unable to find the funds to maintain the building
for worship, the Parish AGM in 2006 agreed reluctantly to close
the church, and continue with services in Tredegarville school
next door.
On 16th September 2006 the congregation held
its closing Eucharist, and walked in procession from the church
through to the newly renovated school yard, re-assembled in the
school hall and dedicated itself to continue Sunday Services there.
Eucharist is still celebrated
in the school 4.00pm every Sunday and 11.15pm on the first Sunday
of every month. 'God on Mondays' brings parents and children together
after school in term times for a refreshing time of Christian
story telling and worship.
