Time To
Build The Ark Again!
Floods, Hurricanes, Drought.
The outlook for the world’s weather isn’t great. All over the world we are beginning to see the effects of global warming.
Climate change isn’t unusual; it’s a natural phenomenon, part of the process by which the earth maintains the equilibrium that allows it to sustain life.
What is unusual is the rate at which the climate is changing. Usually the natural process takes place over thousands of years which allow nature time to adapt or migrate. This new change - provoked by human activity rather than nature – is happening at breakneck speed. Within 100yrs, the same temperature changes could occur that may have otherwise taken 10,000 years. It may be that a 3rd of species will be extinct by 2050.
Humans will be affected, just as other forms of life. Not all humans will be affected equally. Our ability to avoid the worst excesses is proportional to our wealth, so the richest nations who have been the cause of most of the global warming will get off relatively easily (albeit with increased insurance premiums), whilst the poorest will suffer the most.
This inequality makes climate change a Gospel issue. Jesus’ manifesto commitment is “to bring good news to the poor”, and the Bible is full of evidence of God’s passion for justice for the poor. To destabilise the climate like this is an affront to our Creator, made worse that the poor should bear the brunt.
But what can ordinary folk like you and I do about it?
It is easy to feel helpless in the face of powerful economic and political forces which are at the root of global warming.
But a journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step!
“Operation Noah” offers each of us a chance to take a few simple steps in the right direction. This project is run by Christian Ecology Link and Churches Together in Britain and Ireland. It is named after Noah who, in the face of seemingly overwhelming odds, chose to co-operate with God and answer his call. As a result of Noah’s obedience, life on earth was preserved
