Malcolm started playing at the age of 11 at Monkwearmouth Grammar School in Sunderland, progressing to the Sunderland Schools Youth and Concert Bands.

He also played with the Huddersfield School of Music Band (now known as the Sellers International Band) before moving south and marrying.

Malcolm then played for many years with the Sundon Park/Farrs of Luton Band (where he first met Dinah), Hemel Hempstead Band and Bedford Town Band (where he met Gary Summerfield and Louis).

Malcolm was also a member of the Sovereign Brass quintet, sponsored by Boosey & Hawkes, in the early 90’s.

After a 6 year sabbatical, he too was lured back to playing with the request to help Hitchin Band out at one contest - that was two years ago and he’s still there!
