Power Steering System    

The 365GTC4 was designed as a more user friendly car than the Daytona so the addition of  a power assisted steering system as standard  was not a surprise. Compared to the Daytona driving the  GTC4 at normal speed was a pleasure not a complete physical workout.

A  ZF power  steering pump is mounted by a bracket on the  timing chain chest &  driven mechanically by  a toothed belt  from the crank shaft pulley .

The steering  system  on my car looked like it had received little or no maintenance, the fluid level was low & the drive belt was loose & slipping. Adjustment of the centre tie rod had been made as evidenced by the vice-grip teeth mark deep into the metal. There was  excessive play in both the tie rods & in the steering box itself required adjustment.

I removed the complete steering system in one piece & as can be seen it was completely covered in oil & road dirt

The ZF steering box & steering idler were both the subject of a specialist overhaul & repair where required. There was little wear & tear on the moving parts probably due to the relatively low mileage travelled (60k miles in 36 years). Both units cleaned up very well & were repainted in a gloss engine black as per original. The centre steering & lateral  tie rods were cleaned up & the damage caused by the careless use of vise-grips was repaired. All these parts were then nickel plated  The brass grease nipple housing on the steering idler was  polished up & the complete system looks & works very well.
