My name is Paul Grace and I am a motorcyclist. As a small part of this pastime I have been a regular writer for 'Real Classic' magazine, 'Classic Bike Guide' and also a contributor to 'The Riders Digest' under the tongue-in-cheek pseudonym of 'Anarchy'.
I had decided 'on the spot' to build a historic classic scrambles motorcycle from a scrap frame, using parts begged, borrowed, or purchased cheaply from auction sites and parts specialists. This 'phoenix from the ashes, and detritus of a golden age of nineteen fifties motorcycling' would then be ridden and raced against the best of the countries pre-65 race bikes by myself, a complete novice at motocross riding.
By pure chance the frame shared the same birth date as I did, and it seemed at times that we were inexplicably linked throughout the project. This motorcycle could never be fully competitive against the trick works replicas - but still, I was building the bike to win, and with the competitive spirit always in my mind.
This book has been written for anyone interested in my story of a newcomer's entry into the building and racing of a classic scrambles motorcycle. I hope that some of my mistakes and discoveries may help others who are interested in this sport.
I feel that this book appears
at times to be a minor 'David and Goliath' story of my first season
in this glorious sport. Hopefully it will show the importance
of not just getting somewhere, or even anywhere at all really,
but show that it is how you get there that matters.
Paul Grace.

Synopsis:
Here is the true story of an unlikely classic scrambler being
built from a humble vintage 'Royal Enfield Bullet' motorcycle,
and then racing it in pre 65 classic scrambles. The hand of fate
plays many parts and what goes around comes around, has never
been so very true. The author takes you along this journey (over
a year) from a pile of rusty parts - to a snorting shiny motocross
motorcycle and then into its first season of racing. This is more
than simply a book about classic scrambles.
Both motorcycle and rider were born in 1959 and it's the swan song for this neglected motorcycle, and a last chance for the rider to try to understand the need to take risks and court danger at an age where most men would perhaps play a round of golf, instead of pursuing such a physical sport.
Mistakes are made along the way and the project is interrupted by an assignment of 'off road riding' deep in Siberia. If you ever wondered what goes through the mind of a historic motorcycle racer, or questioned the sanity of these two wheeled gladiators, then this gripping story should give you a small insight into the heart of this classic scrambles-mad-man, and his 'Royal Enfield Bullet'.
