The Elgin Hash House Harriers
Hashing hasn't strayed far from its Kuala Lumpur roots and a
typical Elgin hash today is a loosely-organised group of 10 - 20 men, women,
occasional children and dogs who meet weekly throughout Moray to "chase the
hare". We follow a flour trail, complete with false trails and checkpoints.
The aim of this trickery is to ensure that all hashers stay together and a well
laid trail will result in all hashers crossing the finish line at the same time,
regardless of sex, age or infirmity. Thus if you feel the need to run fast then
you'll be first to the check, first to check out all the false trails and last
to leave the check on the correct trail. Meanwhile the wife and kids will be
200yds further on. The runs take place, mainly through one of the many beautiful
local forests, and they last between 45 minutes and an hour on Mondays in the
Summer and Sundays in the Winter. Following a swift drink from the Hash's mobile
bar the Hash moves on to a suitable Hash House (nearby pub) to exercise the
further traditions of the Hash. Whilst this feature of the Hash is not
compulsory it does allow you to talk to one another without wheezing. To some
the social aspect of the hash can be more important than the exercise and EH3
indulges in many purely social gatherings.
EH3, which is the most Northerly Hash in the UK, was formed in 1984. It's motto,
'Hashus Elginatum non marbilensii' is entirely in keeping with the generally
accepted belief that if you have half a mind (less marbles) to go hashing , then
that's all it takes!
The Hash is free for the first run and £1.50 a visit thereafter (to cover the
drinks). All you need to run is a track suit/RonHills/shorts and a T/Sweat shirt
- anything goes. There are no rules, but, do not wear new trainers - a heinous
crime in Hash circles that may only be redeemed by drinking refreshment from
them.
So, if you've always promised yourself that you would get fit one day then this
is the least painful and least embarrassing way to start. Go on, do it. You've
nothing to lose, .................................except your marbles.
