The Royal Manor of Portland is about seven miles from Weymouth on the A354.
It is well placed as a base from which to explore this Jurassic
coastline and the rest of the county.
The cottage is situated in Chiswell which is part of the area locally known as 'underhill'.
There is a good bus service which runs every 10 minutes with routes to the rest of
Portland and Weymouth and, in summer, open top buses run around the island to Portland Bill.
In spring and summer small local ferries run between Castletown and Weymouth Harbour.
Within a few minutes walk of the cottage is The Cove House Inn, The Ship Inn,
an Indian and Chinese TakeAway. There is also a small fish market selling a variety
of seafood including local crab, lobster, scallops and other shellfish.
In Castletown (a 10 - 15 minute walk) there is The Royal Breakwater Hotel
(very popular with divers) and The Portland Roads Hotel both of which serve food.
A guide to eating out - More soon.
From the cottage the coastal cliff path can be accessed for an enjoyable walk around the
island or if that's a bit to far then stop at Portland Bill and try a crab sandwich or the
superb scones from the familly owned Lobster Pot Cafe - Then catch the open top bus back
to Chiswell. If you're into cylcing then there are numerous routes, both off and on road,
available to you including the Rodwell trial to Weymouth following the route of the old
railway line.
