Field names and other topics of interest encountered during the
LENTON FARM & STONAR circular walk.

Field names, like the paths round or through them tend to change with use and time. Based on research taken from old estate maps and living memory, the names of the fields you will see on this walk are outlined below with the current boundary configurations.

As this is a circular walk, it may be started at the place most convenient to yourself. The numbers on the map refer to information found below  and relate to aspects of the walk encountered along the route. Clearly the route may be tackled in either direction, but it is easier to follow the notes if  you walk in the direction indicated. Paths may be muddy if it has been wet and some stiles could be challenging for the less agile.

One The walk starts at the north-west corner of the Recreation Field where there is access from Nursery Close via Chapel Rise and the A365. If you are walking a dog, you must use this entrance as dogs are not permitted on to the Recreation Field for health and safety reasons. Stock are often kept in these fields and if this is the case, your dog should be on a lead. You will see a stile tucked away in this corner and it is from here that the walk starts.  Pass over the stile and turn immediately left keeping close to the hedge. This field is called Ten Acres and it did measure just that until a good part of it was sold off for the Recreation Field. Customs being as they are - it is still called Ten Acres.
Carry on down to the corner and over the next stile into Pieces. Continue in the same direction with the hedge on your right down to the corner and follow the hedge round to the left 10 or so paces where you will see a stile in the hedge on the right. Go over here into Little Burridge and keep walking in the same direction with the hedge on your right. As the field becomes Big Burridge, you may need to pick your way carefully since it can be very boggy along here. Head just to the right of the dumpy pylons and go through the gap in the corner into Spring Ground.
Pass the Dumpy Pylons, round the corner & through the gap in the hedge.      Exit Calves Meadow through gap by oak tree.
TwoPass under the electricity cables and cross to the hedge with the pylons. Now follow this hedge as it curves round the corner to the left and pass through the access gap into Calves Meadow. Turn right and keeping close to the hedge make for the buildings of Newhouse Farm straight ahead. The field narrows and bends to the right and at the end, by an old oak tree with enormous roots, go through the gap, turn left and forwards to Combe Lane. Check for traffic then turn left up the lane past the Farm and cottages.
Just before the small bridge in the right hand verge is an old mile stone. This lane was an old coach road to Bath by way of South Wraxall and Kingdown.

Mile Stone                      Newhouse Farm                              Carry on up Combe Lane          Gate to Bridleway

Three Carry on up the lane past the semi-detached cottages and on up to the first corner where on the right you will find a bridleway and a new metal gate. Go through the gate into Lenton Brimbles and forwards keeping close to the hedge on your right until you come to another gate. Pass through this into Six Acre Conigre and the next, Lenton Conigre, walking in the same straight line with the hedge on your right. The next gate takes you into Lenton Farm yard itself where you should take the gate immediately on your right and exit the yard into a field. Curve round to your left skirting the farm buildings and farm house. Notice a chicken gate, (a small gap specially made), in the wall skirting the farmhouse and pass through the metal gate ahead. Cross over a small stream on huge flat slabs of stone.

Gates in & out of Lenton farmyard             Chicken Gate            Gate out of Lenton Cowleaze
FourTurn to your left  and straight ahead is another gate. Go through this into Coarse Mead and aim for the corner diagonally opposite. Here you will find a stile to get over. Immediately turn left and cross over another stream into Long Moor Field and then turn right. Follow the line of the hedge to the corner.
