1946 Ekco A21

This is absolutely gorgeous. It's in nice original condition, the Bakelite is nice (I haven't polished it so you're seeing it dirt-and-all) and all parts are present and correct. Even the pesky little celluloid labels over the tops of the press buttons are intact. There are only two moans. The first is that the dial has suffered fading of the red printing. All the other printing is there, but the red, which was used for Long Wave, had pretty much disappeared (see photo). That's nobody's fault, but it is a moan. The other moan is that when I took the back off to take the picture, I saw that the speaker wires are disconnected, so someone has removed the chassis, not repaired it, and put it back in again, I would guess. It doesn't look to have been messed about with though. The dial drive string is broken. Hopefully that discouraged further fiddling. After all, if you haven't got the right string, you'll never get the tuning drive to work.
This is a short superhet, using Mullard AC octal valves, and it's "short" because it uses an EBL31 as detector and output valve, rather than using an EBC33 as detector and audio amplifier and then an EL33 as output. Does that leave it short of gain? Technically, yes, a little, but the EBL31 is an easy valve to drive so you should find that it will shout quite loudly enough. Don't worry too much about the legendary rarity of EBL31s. I've got plenty and it looks like the one that's in there is just fine (though I haven't tested the valves). This will polish up to be a very impressive radio, and this is my idea of a nice set. I know some of the best Ekco bakelite cabinets hold very so-so chassis, but the A21 is a good set, and this is a very nice example which is well worth saving. I think you'd have fun with this if you decided that a big Bakelite set was to be the next restoration project. I have a spare chassis in the shed, so if you need any bits, I should be able to help.
