| This is a little cracker! The date is a bit of a guess, really, because I can't
find a Portadyne MC2 in any of my usual dating sources. It's a very simple little battery set. It's TRF,
and in fact it's about the simplest it could be. There's a little Mullard PM dull-emitter triode to
act as a detector (with reaction, of course!) and a Mullard PM pentode to drive the loudspeaker. The speaker
is a Moving Coil design, which makes me think this is probably 1933. If it was older, it would probably have
been fitted with a moving iron speaker for cheapness. It's a compact and good looking set, and while it will
never get a lot of weak stations, it's a really cute little set. There are some moans, as you'd hope. There
is a Bakelite socket fitted to one side, above the aerial socket. It's an ancient fitting itself, and if you
removed it you'd still have a hole in the side of the cabinet, so I guess it ought to stay. There is some
woodworm, but it's been in Cornwall for too long to have avoided the dreaded bugs. It's not too bad and I have
given it a good old pickle with woodworm killer. The speaker cloth is worn out, and there is a hole in the
cloth which covers the holes in the back of the set, so some nice reproduction cloth will be needed there. One
knob is certainly not original, so you will need a matching pair of knobs to make it look right. Other than
those little moans, it looks like a lovely little set which is going to be huge fun for someone. I know
there's always demand for TRF sets, and this one is not only TRF, it's dead cute too! I really don't mind
if nobody wants this because it's very nearly too nice to sell anyway.
Size: 37cm High, 31cm Wide, 21cm Deep. Just email me if you want this one.
