October 2006
CONGRATULATIONS TO ROB
ON A RECORD 6th GRAND PRIX MIDGET WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP

Rob Sayell successfully defended the Grand Prix Midget World Championship at Bovingdon Raceway in Hertfordshire on Sunday 1st October 2006, taking his 6th World Crown in 8 years, the most any one driver has won since the competition started in 1977 (ironically the year Rob was born).
Rob qualified 3rd equal on the grid despite attending only 6 of the 13 qualifying rounds. Having tossed a coin for the place Rob started on the outside of row 2 in 4th place in a 20 car field.
Rob's result robbed European and National Points Champion Alan Buckland of a triple championship result but their battle was not the close contest seen over the last couple of years. Rob moved up to second on lap 2 and battled with Buckland for just 6 laps before finally going round him on lap 10 from where Rob was able to pull out almost half a lap lead by 2/3 distance putting 5 back markers between him and the runner up by the chequered flag.
After the race Rob was clearly delighted commenting my car was loose so I was very aware that I could spin it at any time but by driving a nice steady smooth race I was able to stay out of trouble in the wet conditions and I am really pleased to win it.
The result takes the Sayell family to G P Midget history collecting a total of 10 World Championships between them, Robs father Harry also taking 4 in the 1990s.
Rob announced his intention to take a break after winning last years Drivers Championship and indeed attended only 8 of the 16 fixtures but the results on Sunday, together with an excellent outing at Swaffham on 2nd September where he won the National Championship, moved Rob up to finish third in the 2006 Drivers Championship despite only 50% attendance.
Plans for next year see Rob getting married and another part time season racing mainly on local circuits plus watching his father Harry back on track with a newly built Vauxhall powered Midget which the team have been building and is nearing completion.
