It is a sad fact that during the second world war, a number of plane crashes occurred in the area around Potton. Some were accidents, mechanical failures, or plain bad luck, but all were tragic and many brave young men lost their lives.
This part of my site is respectfully dedicated to those who perished around my home village. Potton is a small market town of long lineage. Potton Wood is the scene of one of the accidents mentioned here, part of which was owned by Judith, niece of William the Conqueror. Please click on the Town logo to go to the official Potton Town web-site.
Each incident is given it’s own web-page, but you will see that for most events the information is sparse. There will be a lot of detail in the official records but I have not had time to research these, and so I rely on family members with memories to share contacting me and providing whatever data they wish.
If you have any information about these incidents that you would like to share, please do so by e-mailing me. All contacts will be treated in confidence, and no data provided will be posted on the pages without permission.
Thanks.
By the way, previous visitors to the Liberator KN736 page will notice the story has been completely changed, as a result of Mr. Stephen McNulty, the nephew of one of the casualties, graciously sharing a lot of the data he has collected including a number of letters from one of the survivors giving a much more accurate account of the events.
Click on the yellow sub-links which have opened up in the navigation panel on the left hand side of the window to read about wartime plane crashes around Potton.
