The Men Who Perished |
 |
There is some little information regarding the names of the men who perished on the American ships, but even less (that I have been able to find) about the Germans. The names of the Americans are recorded in a number of places: Kimberly’s early reports; newspaper reports; and a memorial plaque in the chapel of the Mare Island Navy Yard at San Francisco reproduced on the left. The names are usually spelt differently at each reference, and the variations are most likely phonetic caused by them perhaps being taken down from word-of-mouth. I guess the most reliable ought to be the plaque, presumably taken from official records, but even Captain Schoonmaker’s name isn’t perfectly correct; nevertheless, these are the spellings I have repeated here. There is a German memoral but I can find no description of the inscriptions it carries. There are conflicting reports about whether any Samoans lost their lives in the rescue attempts. |

There is a memorial in Apia Town to those German sailors who died on Adler and Eber. As I have said, I do not know if they are inscribed with the names of those who lost their lives. The very few of SMS Eber crew who survived or were ashore on guard duty when the hurricane struck are listed, but the spelling is contradictory. Those who perished in SMS Adler I have not yet been able to identify.
