CARLISLE AND THE BORDER:

A HISTORY

Delivered by Anton Hodge, local historian and author of "The Border" and "The Great Wall of Britain", this course will look at over 2,000 years of history in Carlisle, with special reference to its place on the Border. As well as a general background and investigation of the Border line history, the course will feature specific episodes in Carlisle's history, such as the Roman Occupation, the siege of the city during the Civil War, the Jacobite rebellions and others.

Course Details

The course examines the history of Carlisle and the Anglo-Scottish border in the west. It will look at the growth of the city and how its proximity to the border affected the local people, economy and environment.

No previous knowledge is required but an interest in local history would certainly help!

By the end of the course you will have a general understanding of 2,000 years of Carlisle's history and the story of the border. You will also know about the tools essential to the local historian and how to go on and use these to add to the knowledge acquired on the course - should you wish to do so.

The course will look at historical evidence such as documents, maps and other sources and will be delivered with the help of visual aids. An optional field trip/visit in the area may be arranged, subject to interest/demand.
