Description:

Diatoms are microscopic mobile plants with silicaceous shells living in rivers, seas and lakes. The above picture shows one species, triceratum, as seen with transmitted light. The triangular outline has a border of small regular crescents. At each corner there is an oval 'foot'. The rest of the shell is filled with a hexagonal array of circles that can be perfect in some specimens, but shows slight shifts and flaws in others.
